It’s no fun when your Internet goes down. More importantly, if your Internet is critical for work, school or other applications, lost Internet connections can cause real serious problems. What to Try to Fix Internet Connections

Your first step is to figure out where the problem actually is. Internet connections stop working either because of a problem with your Internet connection itself or a problem your computer has with receiving the Internet connection. Once you isolate which it is, you’ll have an easier time figuring out how to resolve it. Try accessing the Internet with another computer. If you can, it’s a computer problem. If you can’t, it’s some problem originating outside your computer.

Check your router and modem. Are all the lights on that should be? If not, it’s probably simply a matter of something being unplugged. Make sure all the cables are connected and that they are in the ports they should be in. Make sure the modem is connected to the wall jack. If everything seems to be connected, try power cycling. This is simply unplugging the modem and router for 30 seconds or so to allow them to reboot. Plug them back in, wait for all the lights to go green, and see if this resolves your problem. If not, you may wish to contact your Internet service provider to see if Internet connections are down due to an outage in your area or a failure to keep current on your bill.

Try rebooting your computer. This may clear the problem by itself. If it doesn’t, consider releasing and renewing your IP address. It’s a simple operation and it may do the trick. You might also have to tell your computer to detect your Internet connection. Your computer might have lost contact with the modem somehow and needs to be reminded to look for it again.

What Else to Know About Internet Connections

Sometimes your Internet connection problem may be due to malware, malicious software programs like viruses, adware, and spyware. If you’ve just downloaded a new program, especially a freeware program, right before your Internet issues, there is a good chance that this is the culprit. Worse yet, some spyware programs trash your Internet connection when you uninstall them.
